This is one of the original model Minox subminiature cameras made in Riga, Latvia. Unlike the later Minox aluminum and plastic body designs the outer case of the Minox Riga is stainless steel and noticeably heavier. About 17,500 of the Riga models were made between 1937 and 1944, and only about 6,000 had been made by 1940 when Riga, Latvia was occupied by the Russian military. Between 1941 and 1944 the German army occupied Riga, Latvia. There were few Minox Riga cameras available when the United States entered World War II and the US Office of Strategic Services (“OSS”) sought to acquire them for clandestine use. The cameras were easy to conceal and had the ability to take normal and very closeup photographs. They were perfect for photographing documents. Minox USA offered to repurchase Minox Riga cameras from its customers, and these repurchased cameras were supplied to the OSS (which was the predecessor of the Central Intelligence Agency — CIA). The Minox Riga is a true spy camera that was used by the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Russia and other countries. The later models of Minox cameras would continue to be used by intelligence services worldwide through the Cold War. Please check the photographs, and you will note that there is a dent on one corner of the camera. There is a Minox leather belt case included in this lot, but this is a Minox B case rather than an original Minox Riga purse case.
